Sure, you could spend 20 years mastering micro expressions and body language to pull off “lie detector” tricks or demonstrations of body language. You’re in luck. Using the One-Way secret or a card force, you could do it today! One of my favorite tricks is determining what someone is thinking. Today, you will be able to pull off one of the greatest tricks of all times with no practice and knowledge of advanced magic!
Effect: A card is chosen by a spectator and placed back into the deck. The deck is shuffled. The magician proceeds to flip cards over while asking questions and “watches for shifts in eye movement, breathing patterns, body position”, etc. The guy seems to struggle but takes an educated guess and is right again and again and finally nails the correct card! Dang, that guy is good at reading people!
Secret: Force a card, have it placed back into the deck and shuffled. You might want to spread the cards on the table face up to see how far from the top the card is. I'd recommend cutting the cards or shuffling the cards to get the chosen card toward the top. Otherwise, this might last a little too long! (This trick can easily be accomplished with the One-Way principle as well. See Magic Techniques on page 39. It's your choice.)
Performance: With the popularity of poker tells and shows with body language experts solving crimes, the popularity of psychology is amazing. You are going to “bluff” them into thinking you are a body language expert! Don’t worry, this is easy. You already can find the card with ease because you either forced their card and know what it is or it is marked. Starting from the top, turn cards over one at a time and show them to the spectator. As you show them each card, actually observe their face and make up comments about anything that you see. You know that the card you are holding is not their card, so say something like, ”Mmm, I can see that you are breathing normally and there was no change in your eye dilation... I am guessing this is not your card.” At the next card say something like, "Ah, you blinked. That's a nervous tension release. You must be trying to throw me off." Continue to play with them until you reach their actual card, which you identify from the one-way marking on the back. Here’s the fun part. You know when it is their card and when you hold it up you will most likely see a real reaction of some sort! You can mention that real reaction and make up something about how it reveals their chosen card. If you do not pick up on reaction, you can just say something like, ”Ah! Your attempt to freeze up and reveal nothing to me makes me suspicious about this card! This must be your card!”
Tip: Now to really make this a profiling effect, ask them to lie to you as you show them cards. Have them say if a card is or is not theirs. However, you will know for certain if they are lying or not! Play it all off accordingly.
